Support for parents of children under 5 in Malta

This page is for parents whose child is not yet at school. The nursery may have mentioned something, the 18-month check may have raised a question, or you may have a concern of your own. You do not need a diagnosis or a referral to talk to me.

My work with young children

In my current work, I lead SEN provision within Early Years, supporting the development of individualised programmes, guiding staff, collaborating with families and multidisciplinary professionals, and helping create learning environments in which differences are anticipated rather than treated as an afterthought. That is where my advice to parents comes from.

What we can look at together

We can look at what you have noticed about how your child communicates, plays, moves and manages changes. We can go through daily routines and transitions, and think about how to talk with the nursery or kindergarten and what to ask them to try. We can also look at which services to ask about and what to say when you do.

You don’t need more jargon. You need to know what to do next.

The public services, and where I fit

Malta’s Early Intervention Service is free and supports babies and young children aged 0 to 5 with developmental delays and disabilities, and their families. Support is given through home visits and in childcare centres and schools. Concerns are often first raised at a Well Baby Clinic check, at the 18-month screening, or by nursery staff. Assessment is done by doctors and other professionals, for example through the Child Development Assessment Unit.

I do not assess or diagnose, and I am not part of the Early Intervention Service. I work with you while those routes run their course. My guide to early intervention in Malta explains how the public service works.
